[December 15, 2004] After a few delays, Twig's LP has been finished and is being shipped out. It should see the light of day in about a week or so. We saw some photos of the covers and they look pretty groovy. The second side of the LP is a 15-minute sound-collage which was handmade by Twig on his own in-house record-cutting machine and it's filled w/lock-grooves and other analog trickery that will probably ruin our needles, and yours. You need this record. Our first confirmed project for 2005 will be a split-single of Phoenix, AZ's THE MINIBOSSES and TOTALLY RADD from Valencia, CA. NO DOCTORS have been residing in the San Fran area for a couple months now. They have played a few shows with EL GUAPO, TAIWAN DEATH and BURMESE and they have all been successful gigs. But now the NO DOCS are returning to the under-underground to work on material for their next full-length album. They won't be playing out for at least a few months. The San Francisco Bay-Guardian mentioned them in a recent article on the "San Francisco Sound" last week. Press reviews are still popping up for the EP and we now have some CDs and LPs of their great Hunting Season album for sale. If you haven't gotten this album, you MUST. It's awesome! [October 17, 2004] Billy is starting to work on a TV show called Gamebot which is run by 2 brothers in North Carolina. The show covers classic and favorite video games and game systems and the like. He's already done his first interview for the show. There is going to be an episode about video game music which Billy will appear in, as well as artists that appear on the VGM MIX TAPE #8 comp., to be sure. While the show can only be caught locally in NC right now, some efforts are being made to get some other local cable stations around the U.S. to try to pick it up. Well hallelujah! TRUMANS WATER are doing their first U.S. tour in 5 years next month!!!!! That's right! They are doing a few select dates in the Northwest with Morris Tepper of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & Tom Waits's band, who himself is touring with PJ Harvey. Then the band will head south toward their point of origin some 13 years ago, good ol' San Diego, CA, where they'll be joined by SOUL JUNKer Glen Galloway for at least a show or 2, we hope. It looks like the NO DOCTORS won't have a whole lotta time to settle into their new digs in San Francisco, because they will probably be doing some dates supporting TW in the San Fran/Oakland area, as well as Weasel Walter's new band CURSE OF THE BIRTHMARK on at least a date or 2. We are really excited to see TRUMANS WATER hitting the road here and will be cramming every tidbit of info that comes our way DOWN YOUR THROAT!!! TRUMANS WATER aren't the only band on tour in November. TERROR AT THE OPERA's tour with SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME is on the go! This will be happening on the East Coast from November 14th to December 4th. We'll have the official info up very soon for you! Our next record is going to be a solo 12" LP for Twig Harper of NAUTICAL ALMANAC, entitled Intuitive American Esoteric Vol. 1. The street date is December 7th. This is the first of a 2-record series of much more elaborate and (dare I say...?) sophisticated recordings made by Twig over the last couple of years. It's really good, freaky, kerrrazy stuff. This is going to be a 4-way split release between No Sides, Ignivomous, White Tapes, and Twig's own imprint Heresee, but we'll have it the cheapest! READ OUR LIPS!!! That's all for now. Please don't forget to vote! [August 28, 2004] The NO DOCTORS CD EP ERP Saints had to be pressed as a full-size CD, not a 3" as we'd intended, but it looks so great that I don't think anyone will be complaining. The street date is September 14th. For the detractors out there who still think the NO DOCS are some halfwit "noise-rock" band, YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY BY THE MUSICIANSHIP OF THE BAND ON THIS CD! GUARANTEED!!! We've been aware of this for a while and have waited for the right time to drop the bomb on everyone else in the Chicago area and outlying Midwest: the NO DOCTORS are all moving after their tour ends! In October they will relocate to San Francisco, CA and that, as they say, will be that. Their final Chicago show is coming up in less than a week, and the mood around the No Sides office is palpably, uhh, moody, for lack of a better word. It's going to be sad to see them go. The NO DOCTORS tour will begin on Sept. 2nd and run all month with only a day or so off. They just locked down a slot with the 2nd annual No Fun Festival in Brooklyn, NY and that's very exciting as they will be playing with a little band from Providence, RI called LIGHTNING BOLT! They will be touring with a synth-and-drums duo called HAUNTED HOUSE, who are from their hometown of Minneapolis, MN. We've been servicing a 3-song CD by the band with NO DOCS packages and we threw it on and man this band is fucking weird! It's gonna be a good time yall! Get out and see these guys if they're hitting yer town! Two new instrumental songs by TERROR AT THE OPERA appear in Asia Argento's new movie THE HEART IS DECEIPTFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS, based on JT LaRoy's famous book. This is amazingly ironic, cuz if you aren't a horror film fan, you might not realize that TERROR AT THE OPERA is the title of a film made by her father, Italian horror master Dario Argento! Anyway the film stars Winona Ryder and Marilyn Manson, among others and had a somewhat notorious opening at the Cannes Film Festival recently. Hopefully it should see some US distribution soon and will make some rounds. TERROR AT THE OPERA continue to play throughout the Michigan area. It looks like they'll be getting a tour together with SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME for the fall, in October we think. More on that soon. The official No Sides Records sampler has just been completed by Billy Sides and Chicago filmmaker/rocker extraordinaire John Shane, who has already done some great post-production work on the VGM MIX TAPE comp. and the MALADE DE SOUCI album. The compilation is called VOTE NOW! and features all yer favorite No Sides artists plus some exclusive guests. Some artists' tracks have been remastered and the whole thing is really just ultra-gnarly and loud. The comp. was made primarily for the NO DOCTORS tour but of course we'll have some for sale here at the site. It's a good hour of music and is highly recommended to the curious or the hesitant. Like our mp3 section ain't good enough anyway. New bands, future projects, what's next? We want to say that something is 100% finalized but at this time we haven't got too much to say. Some of you may have noticed that some band names in the roster have disappeared and a new one or two has materialized in their places. Some of the older bands we don't close the door on just cuz their members are 2,000 miles apart. While we're not officially announcing details here and now, some of the "guests" on the VOTE NOW! sampler are pretty close to being our new additions and it's just up to you to figure it out. Or just stay tuned. [May 19, 2004] No Sides Records is very pleased to announce that Chicago's NO DOCTORS have officially joined our roster! We will be doing a 3" CD EP for them which will feature at least 4 brand-spankin-new songs! Right now, the NO DOCS are taking a break from playing live gigs (except for the upcoming show at Northwestern University on May 22nd) and they're going to be spending the next month locked in a dungeon gaining experience points to reach their next level of musical abilities. They'll be recording in Ann Arbor, MI at Keyclub Recording with Jessica Ruffins (LAKE OF DRACULA) and Bill Skibbe (SHELLAC's personal soundman these days, reportedly). Jessica and Bill also worked on their amazing 2nd album Hunting Season, which was released on CD earlier this year by the Minneapolis, MN label Go Johnny Go. Very soon a limited vinyl edition of Hunting Season is going to be put out by Toney Vastbinder of 7,000 DYING RATS. Guys, buy this fucking record immediately! Go Johnny Go is now planning to release a live DVD for the band and that is tentatively going to be in time for their (5-week...?) U.S. tour in September, as will our release. This EP will be their first fully professional studio recording and it's going to rock, yo!!! Be all up on it! Kiss the rings! Billy and the VGM MIX TAPE #8 CD appeared in Entertainment Weekly's supplemental rag Listen2This last week as part of a "Videogame Special," which also featured articles on METHOD MAN's new game Def Jam Fight For New York and on how the STROKES got the idea for their new album cover from Drew Barrymore's Centipede arcade machine. Our particular article covered the CD and 2 other vgm artists, 5RC artists THE ADVANTAGE, which features drummer Spencer Selm of HELLA, and the Canadian Game Boy artist 6955. The piece is up in the press section so check this out, and if you got a minute, please pinch us. TERROR AT THE OPERA have been landing all kinds of cool gigs in the Detroit area since the release of their CD. Last month they played with GET HUSTLE, and at the end of this month they're doing an outdoor show with the reformed URGE OVERKILL! Opportunities for summer touring are starting to come about for them, and while nothing's set in stone, we hope to see them out on the road for at least a couple weeks. As soon as we know, you'll know. [March 24, 2004] TERROR AT THE OPERA's CD has been rescheduled for April 13th (same day as the release of KILL BILL VOL. 1 on DVD!) and the official album title is "Snake Bird Blue." Orders are now being taken for this album, so please go ahead and send us some money! TERROR AT THE OPERA will be playing a record release show in Detroit on Friday, April 16th at the Lager House. MAX CLOUD may be on the bill, so let's hope for that. More info on that as it get's set in stone. Cast your vote suckers!!! We now have No Sides Records shirts for sale which display our personal picks for presidency and vice presidency of this great land-- Corey Haim and Corey Feldman! The shirts are white with red art and blue lettering and are $6 each. We have boys and girls shirts in many different sizes and styles. Email us beforehand and let us know what size and gender you are and we'll let you know what we got. Thay are only available until election day so get 'em now! [February 6, 2004] Happy 2004 everybody! No Sides Records enters into its 7th year with quite a bit of excitement. First of all, we are happy to announce that our next record will be TERROR AT THE OPERA'S CD. The scheduled release date is Tuesday, March 30th! The TERROR gals did a last-minute recording session, just days before submitting their album master, and a nice chunk of the top-of-the-minute refined material by these rather prolific ladies (they have over 40 songs after being together as a band for only a year and a half or so!) should appear on the final version of the CD. The duo should be doing a few Midwest shows for the release of the CD during the last weekend of March; maybe a couple shows with YOWIE. More details as they become solidified. Check out the fully-updated press section on this site, especially featuring the most recent reviews of the VGM MIX TAPE #8 CD. On Dec. 4th, Spike TV (formerly TNN) hosted an awards ceremony for current and popular video games, simply titled the Video Game Awards. At the last minute a Game Boy music contest was set up, and an edited version of ROYAL SPACE FORCE's Uber Code CD EP was entered with songs from about a dozen or so other artists from the U.S. and Europe. The whole thing was kind of half-assed, according to an anonymous insider, but Malcolm Maclaren (yes, THE Malcolm Maclaren), was supposed to be one of the judges. Not many folks are quite sure what came out of the thing, but for about a week or so, you could go to spiketv.com and click on the VGA icon and hear all the songs on a built-in player that would instantly appear on the screen. Since all of the songs were posted under the "Christian names" of the artists, the only other artists that entered into the competition that we recognized were ROLE MODEL and Mark Denardo, formerly of TEMPLE OF BON MATIN. We're still wondering how the whole thing turned out but it was still pretty groovy. Some of you might know that mp3.com has apparently gone out of business, so for the past couple weeks we have had the enjoyable task of bringing over tracks for each band from their respective pages and uploading them to this site. The "Listen" page is now up and you can check out selected tracks from just about every artist on the label. VGM MIX TAPE fans get to check out some interesting stuff on the Listen page. We put up alternate tracks for some of the artists on the CD as well as selected tracks that we liked but ultimately had to pass on. At least this we they can get up to be heard. You can kind of think of the tracks together as a "Volume 4" of VGM material. TRUMANS WATER re-united in back in November for a couple gigs in Portland. Kevin hopes to come back in April for a longer stay, during which they may do some dates on the west coast or in the mdwest. Fingers crossed! Did somebody say STRANGULATED BEATOFFS? |
